Nobody Knows

a Saturn in Leo themed film by Hirokazu Kore-eda

Recently I watched three films by Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda. This one, Nobody Knows, based on a true story, is about four children abandoned by their mother in an apartment in Tokyo, who live alone for several months. The children, between the ages of 4 and 12, are the responsibility of the oldest, Akira, who initially provides for them with money sent by the mother who tells them that she is working in Osaka and is too busy to come home.

This is no Home Alone-like series of comedic misadventures. The film moves slowly and is mostly an anguishing tale of children simply existing without adult care or support: sleeping, playing quietly, watching TV, coloring... They are restless, bored, and lonely while waiting and watching for their mother to return. At first, resilient and resourceful, they are able to cook, bathe, launder, and clean. They stay out of trouble and nurture each other with amazing grace, dignity, and gentleness, their plight undetected by the world around them. We learn they each have different fathers, were never registered at birth, and, except for Akira, have never attended school.

Eventually, their mother stops sending money and Akira discovers she most likely will never return. He does what he can to lift their spirits and to continue to provide food, but eventually the water, lights, and gas are cut off and the conditions in the apartment rapidly decline.

Leo rules children, play, creativity, self-expression, the development of the ego, happiness, the ability to say "yes!" to life. The dark side of Saturn in Leo can be too much responsibility too soon, children who need to be adults before they are ready, arrested development, loneliness, and abandonment.

Other Saturn words are rights, respect, duty, and honor. So I will end with this quote from Kofi Annan on children's rights:

"There is no trust more sacred than the one the world holds with children. There is no duty more important than ensuring that their rights are respected, that their welfare is protected, that their lives are free from fear and want and that they can grow up in peace." -- Kofi Annan

Peace to you...Demeter

Demeter,

Thanks for all your comments, thoughts and the mention of the Candle website, I am now linked there, a great site and idea. Yes the States seems to be the Stage for most events right now. I have yet to compare the various US charts, I do know Saturn reaches the Midheaven of the Scorpio Rising chart later this month. They all seem useful for different 'reads'.
Saturn in Leo - I was born with this placement so going through my Return as we speak (9th House). I enjoyed your piece on this, very sensitive and understanding. Reminded me of a lot, during this time of my own shifts.
Love,
Neil
